The Organics Interview
W: Welcome to Weird Magazine. Tell about your band.
O: We’re a developing band of San Martians. We started out on Brian’s 23rd birthday a couple of years back, when Josh recorded a drunken jam of Robin and Brian, which became our first song, Ship to Zion. Shortly afterward Josh was forced to learn the bass, having never picked one up before. Max joined after a jam session where he picked up a trumpet and thus began the Organics. Robert Ogden, a good friend of the band, accompanied us on his electric piano for over a year. Roberto’s decision to retire left us without a pianist, and to fill the void we added Robert McCartney, or Bosto, to play second guitar on our one year anniversary show at the Triple Crown. Since then we’ve been expressing our political and spiritual views abstractly through our music. All that’s left is to dominate the world…
W: What kind of Genre would you consider yourselves?
O: we’ve been called rock/swing/psychedelic/punk/metal/reggae
It’s a question of debate…..
W: Introduce the band members.
O: Robin Friend- lead vocals/lead guitar
Josh Schaefer- bass
Brian Carlisle- drums/percussion
Max Muckelroy- trumpet/backing vocals
Robert Paul McCartney- rhythm and lead guitar
W: Name some of your influences?
O: King Crimson, Neil Young, Iron Maiden, Roky Erickson, The Misfits, The Doors, My Morning Jacket, The Mars Volta, Tool, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Fleet Foxes, The Flaming Lips, Queens of the Stone Age, Pink Floyd, (old) Metallica, the list goes on and on…..
W: Where do you guys perform regularly?
O: In San Marcos we’re usually at The Triple Crown, or Gray Horse Saloon, and in Austin we’ve been playing Roadhouse Rags and Red Eyed Fly. We’re hoping to expand to more venues in Austin and San Antonio.
W: Why the name Organics? Enlighten me.
O: Aside from the obvious meaning, there’s this video game that thrusts you in the middle of a war between organic and synthetic life forms. We think it’s a great analogy for the growing parasitic relationship between technology and the human existence.
W: Do you guys have any rituals before you perform?
O: A shot of Jameson and a left handed cigarette.
W: What motivates the band?
O: The need to create and perform music from our souls… and green bean casserole.
W: Beer, Babes, or Burgers?
O: Yes please.
W: Where are you performing throughout January?
O: We’ve got a show with The Beaumont’s and Chicken Shift at Trophys in Austin on January 8th. We Play Triple Crown on January 16th with Chief Fuzzer, and Gray Horse Saloon in San Marcos with The Couch on January 29th. Another show coming up that’s definitely worth mentioning is the 3rd Annual Texas Independence Day Fest in Maxwell at the Cotton Gin on March 7th.
W: How can weirdo's get in touch with the band to either book you or see/hear your music?
O: www.myspace.com/organicpilgrim, send us your feedback.
W: Tell us how the Hallowsgiving show went in Austin?
O: It’s an annual costume party/pot luck at Roadhouse Rags in which all of the proceeds go to Capitol Area Food Bank. We raised a lot of money and had a great time. We’re looking forward to next year’s Hallowsgiving.
W: Thanks guys. Any final thoughts to the weird readers out there?
O: Don’t let mainstream media tell you what to listen to. Read Weird Magazine. Think for yourself. Question authority.
